FAQ
What is Clevedon Road?
Clevedon Road R&D Limited is an independent software company in Auckland, New Zealand. This shop sells experimental software that we make. We are not Akai Professional.
What is 2KXL PLUS?
An unofficial, independent operating-system upgrade for the Akai MPC2000XL, based on Akai OS 1.20. The current release is v1.3.2, released 7 October 2026. You buy it here, we email a ZIP, and you install it on the machine. See the product page.
Is this an official Akai OS?
No. Akai did not make it and does not endorse it.
What machine do I need?
An Akai MPC2000XL and a way to put OS files on it: a floppy emulator, a ZuluSCSI, or any drag-and-drop method (USB Zip, Compact Flash, or similar). Not other MPC models.
How do I get the file again?
Use Recover download with the email you paid with. The link in the email works for 7 days. Recover sends a new link.
Do I get updates?
Yes. This purchase covers 2KXL PLUS 1.x updates. Use Recover download when a new 1.x build is out.
What is new in v1.3.2?
v1.3.2 is the first public release since v1.1. It includes the work from the v1.2, v1.3 and v1.3.1 test builds:
- Lazy Chop: SAMPLE > F5 CHOP arms a take. The first pad starts it and the first press of each other pad marks a CHOP.
- CHOPS per Sound: up to 10 Sounds in memory can each keep their own CHOPS. CHOPS save inside MPC2000XL
.SNDfiles and return when those files load. - CHOP tools: edit each CHOP in ZONE, turn zones into CHOPS, use CHOPS from 16 LEVELS, keep CHOP notes in saved sequences, and make up to 16 separate Sounds with SLICE SOUND.
- Sampling workflow: KEEP / RETRY bank keys reach all four pad banks, with the normal naming controls available in the Name editor.
- Sound processing: RE-SAMPLE SP CLEAN or SP RING creates a new Sound with 12-bit character; Normalize and HIGH PASS UTILITY are in TRIM > EDIT; stereo Sounds can be summed to mono.
- Program editing: Mode ALL applies the selected Mode, including NORMAL, to all 64 pads.
- Speed and screens: TRIM waveforms draw about 3.5 times faster, stereo WAV files load about 25% faster, Sounds longer than 190 seconds show a waveform, and STOP on MAIN stops ringing samples.
- Power-on splash: a short 2KXL PLUS animation plays at each cold boot and can be replayed from SHIFT+OTHER > VER.
v1.3.2 also fixes Apply-to-All returning to the wrong screen and Transpose accepting incorrect keypad values. The v1.1 features remain: four mute groups, global program transpose, Apply-to-All for frequency, resonance and voice overlap, and directory SND loading.
What are the main limitations?
At most 10 Sounds with CHOPS can be held in memory. Loading an eleventh Chop Sound loads its audio without CHOPS. WAV files do not store CHOPS, and saving a Chop Sound again in stock OS 1.20 or another tool that rewrites the .SND removes its CHOPS. SLICE SOUND makes at most 16 slices. DISCARD, DELETE SECTION and INSERT are unavailable on a Sound that has CHOPS.
16 LEVELS CHOP is not retained after power-off, although CHOP marks in a saved sequence are retained. MIDI IN does not normally play CHOPS, and live pads play the whole Sound when 16 LEVELS is closed. See README.txt and 2KXL_PLUS_v1.3.2_Guide.pdf in the download for the complete operating notes.
What differs from stock Akai OS 1.20?
MIDI Sample Dump (SDS) and input monitoring are not included. The stock 12BIT/16BIT record toggle is removed and every new take is 16-bit. Stock RE-SAMPLE rate, bit-depth and quality conversion is replaced by RE-SAMPLE SP CLEAN and SP RING. Transpose uses the DATA wheel and ignores the keypad.
What should I check before buying?
Check that you have an MPC2000XL and a way to load OS files, read the install guide, and keep verified backups and stock Akai OS 1.20. This is independent software, not an official Akai update. It can contain bugs and you install it yourself. The installation-risk acknowledgement is shown before payment.
Which operations change my Sound?
Normalize and HIGH PASS UTILITY change the selected Sound in place. Work on a copy and keep a backup of the source. RE-SAMPLE SP makes a new Sound and leaves the original untouched.
Is the power-on splash safe?
At a cold boot, the splash runs for about three seconds and then opens MAIN. Do not touch pads or keys, press STOP, or send MIDI during the splash or while anything loads or saves, including an automatic APS load. On the version screen, F5 SPLASH replays the animation; MAIN SCREEN stops a replay.
Is it locked to my MPC?
This version is not locked to a serial number and has no unlock code.
How do I install it?
Read the install guide. The 2KXL_PLUS_v1.3.2.zip download also contains INSTALL.pdf, README.txt, and 2KXL_PLUS_v1.3.2_Guide.pdf.
How do I see the installed version?
Open SHIFT+OTHER > VER. You want 2KXL PLUS - Ver: 1.3.2. A 2KXL PLUS splash also plays at each cold boot, but use the version screen to confirm the exact release.
Can I get a refund?
See the refund policy. If the file will not download, we replace it or refund.
